Perhaps the most influential Megaman game ever, Megaman X was a huge improvement on an already legendary design. Appearing on the SNES in 1993, it was the first Megaman game to appear in 16-bit guise. With stunning backgrounds and amazingly fluid animation for its time, this new Megaman series immediately struck up a new fanbase, and renewed interest within the Megaman fanatics of the time.
However, this series is rife with controversy. Many new questions arose when it was first reported that this new game would take place sometime in the distant future of the original series. Questions like who was X? Was he the old Blue Bomber from 100 years before? What was Zero's real story? Could he be Protoman? Now, over ten years later, the same arguements still exist, and we may never get a straight answer from Capcom or Keiji Inafune. That, however, is half the fun.
The X series immediately seperated itself from it 8-bit beginnings not only in graphics and sound, but in story and content. Some older fans of the classic series rejected the new, "darker" tone of the new series. While it wasn't exactly Mature rating worthy, it did raise a few eyebrows with its themes of mass rioting and the question of what happens when A.I. comes to master its own destiny. The very concept of a more serious story drove away some of the earlier fans of the series, yet brought in even more fans with its more mature theme. Needless to say, it was a huge hit in its own time.
Another major change was the way the bosses were changed from simple Robot Masters to more elaborate animal-shaped Reploids who have gone "Maverick", meaning they have revolted against humanity and are following the orders of their Maverick leader, Sigma. Sigma was Dr Wily's equal in terms of the X series. He took on the role of main bad guy, and did so wonderfully. He, along with most of the Mavericks, provided more than enough of a challenge for the Maverick Hunters, and more importantly, the actual gamer in control.
Following the current theme of making "teams" within the Megaman Community, eight people have decided to each take on the role of one of the legendary eight Mavericks that first appeared in the first Megaman X game. While we may not be the first ever team, we certainly hope you'll find your stay here enjoyable, and will continue to visit for as long as we still stand.
So sit back in your easy chair and prepare to revel in the glory of...The Alpha Movement.
