The Megaman X Collection

The Megaman X Collection was released by Capcom in early 2006. This compilation includes MMX1-6 plus Battle & Chase for its North American debut (about time). While greatly anticipated by fans of the X series, many found themselves severely disappointed by the results. While touting all kinds of bonus features and improvements on the series, we instead ended up with a 'bare-bones' port of the games with little to no extras.

Jade's Comments:

The first X game is identical to the original. The only big difference is X's utterance of "Damn" right after the first fight with Vile. This is what was said in the Japanese version as well, which brings it closer to the original script. I was pleasently suprised by this as well for the fact that the previous Anniversary Collection opted to censor the little bit of swearing that occured, replacing Bass's "Damn" with "Darn". X2 was also identical to the SNES game, the only thing I noticed is that the timing of the music transitions seems a little off, such as encountering the bosses. X3 is the only game that got "enhanced", at least, it was in my opinion. They used the PS1 version of it, which had remixed music and anime cutscenes. A lot of fans disliked the PS1 music however, so I guess this game will be a hit and miss (I for one liked the PS1 music better).

X4 is perhaps the one that disappointed us the most. Capcom said they were going to redub the cutscenes, which they never did. We still get the horrid voice acting here; X still sounding like a five-year-old girl, and Zero still sounding completely pathetic, his voice actor sounding like he's not even trying. X5 also remained exactly the same, right down to the GnR Maverick names. X6 was also a letdown. Not only was the terribly rushed and mangled script not redone, but they also decided to remove the Japanese voice-overs! I figured that if they can't afford to hire decent English voice actors, then they could at least give us the Japanese voices with subtitles; now we can't even get that... >(

I recently heard that Capcom actually did put together one hell of a shebang for an X Collection, with remixed tracks, with redubbed X4, with retranslated X6. Why was it not released? 'Cause Keiji Inafune had them take it all out at the last minute because he decided to make all of that material exclusive to the upcoming 'Maverick Hunter X' remakes of the games. Apparently, he figures that this way, more people will shell out the money for a PSP and also buy Maverick Hunter X. The biggest disappointment, however, is the fact that MHX didn't do as well as Capcom had hoped, meaning the chances of seeing a Maverick Hunter X2 and beyond are pretty slim right now.

Of course, there's also the addition of Battle & Chase. However, it's not available at the beginning; you must finish X1-X3 to unlock it. It's a pretty neat game, however, but I would've rather seen Capcom do another, smaller collection, pairing Battle & Chase with Super Adventure, another original series game that still hasn't made it overseas.
